If the Alhambra is the crowning glory of Muslim Granada, the Cathedral and the Royal Chapel are of Christian Granada.
The Cathedral was commissioned by Queen Elizabeth the Catholic after the Conquest of the city, in the place occupied by the former Great Mosque and is a masterpiece of the Spanish Renaissance. It has an impressive facade and a majestic interior. Carlos V continued the construction respecting the wishes of his grandparents the Catholic Monarchs and it has been preserved to this day.
The Royal Chapel is located between the Cathedral, the Iglesia del Sagrario and the Madraza. The Catholic Monarchs erected it as an eternal resting place to symbolize the total Christianization of the Iberian Peninsula. Their famous daughter Juana “la Loca”, her husband Felipe “el Hermoso” and the infant Miguel de la Paz of Portugal also rest here.
