Are you passionate about history and would you like to lose yourself in the streets of the old Jewish quarter? Granada has all these possibilities and much more. Join us for the following journey through history to discover one of the highlights of the city with the following Jewish quarter tour in Granada.

A pleasant two hours tour through the old Jewish quarter of Granada, the Realejo neighborhood. Monasteries, convents, palaces and noble residences garnish every single street of this area. Walking through this monumental site with more than 500 years of history, we will get breathtaking views of the whole city.

From the Bermejas Towers, remains from the IX Century, we will walk down the hill among the forest of the Alhambra, with the wonderful background of the sound of the fountains and the smell of the gardens.

A tour designed to bring the forgotten Jewish past of Granada to light again.

If we explain a little more in depth what are the particularities that make the Realejo the jewish quarter Granada par excellence, we have a very extensive list. Let’s take it one by one.

The first thing that makes it stand out is that it is one of the oldest quarters of Granada. It is a magical place with whitewashed houses, Cármenes and palaces dating back to the Middle Ages, the Renaissance or even Gothic.

At the time of its greatest splendour, that is, during the Nasrid kingdom, the Realejo served as the Jewish quarter of Granada and was home to around 20,000 people. The vast majority of them were Jews, and they stayed there for 15 centuries. It was at the end of the 15th century when the Catholic Monarchs decreed their expulsion.

Nowadays we find that not much has changed apart from the people and the configuration of the streets. It is still a very popular neighbourhood and inhabited by many locals who maintain the essence that it never lost. If we have to highlight the Jewish quarter of the Realejo for something else, it is undoubtedly its religious fervour, as it is a traditional brotherhood quarter, as can be seen during Holy Week and in the square where the statue of the Cristo de los Favores (Christ of the Favores) is located.

If you find yourself in the Alhambra, it will be very easy to go down to this other neighbourhood made up of narrow streets that are lost as far as the eye can see. As a curious fact we can tell you about the Antequeruela (a way of saying “little Antequera”). This area is so named because it was founded at the beginning of the 15th century when the Christians expelled the Muslims from Antequera. Another of the most beautiful curiosities is that, according to historians, the origin of the current name of the city of the Alhambra can be found in the old name of this neighbourhood. At that time it was known as Garnata Al-Yahud.

These and many more surprises such as the Campo del Príncipe are just some of the surprises that await you when you visit the jewish quarter Granada with us. Discover the purest essence of Granada with local guides with great advantages over other tours or visiting the city on your own.

Don’t forget that you can also contact us with any questions you may have. We will be happy to make the necessary adjustments to make your visit to Granada an unforgettable experience.
