The Alhambra itself is not a building, but a group of buildings that formed the palatine city with a triple character. It is made up of the Alcazaba or military area, the residence of the sultans, the administrative buildings and the gardens. There was a wall surrounding it and it had four entrances: the Puerta de la Justicia, the Puerta de las Armas, the Puerta del Arrabal and the Puerta de la Alberca. The Puerta de las Granadas and the Puerta de los Carros were added later in Christian times. During the summer months, the sultans moved to palaces attached to the Alhambra called the Generalife Gardens, which you can also see on the guided tour. The emblematic image of the Alhambra, the Fountain of the Lions in the palace of the same name, belongs to the Nasrid Palaces. They are a group of palatine buildings that include: the Mexuar, the Palacios de Comares and the Palace of the Lions. The Alcazaba is the oldest building in the Alhambra. It was built on an old castle and was surrounded by a wall, later three new towers were built: the Quebrada, the Homenaje and the Torre de la Vela.
The guided tour of the Alhambra in Granada also includes its Christian part. There is a story that tells how Isabella the Catholic fell in love with it and wanted to make it her Royal Palace. However, the core of the Christian Alhambra is the Palace of Charles V. It was the residence of the emperor and in its vicinity are the Church of Santa Maria de la Alhambra and the Monastery of San Francisco, which is today a Parador Nacional. The Palace of Charles V houses two museums: the Museum of Fine Arts and the Museum of the Alhambra, which displays original objects from the times of Muslim domination.
